10 Foods To Hydrate Your Skin This Summer

Oh how we love summer...unfortunately sunshine can bring along with it scorching heat and perspiration. Sweat results in loss of water and salts from the body leading to dehydration. Dehydration affects the skin adversely and results in several skin problems.
Dehydration, sunburns, sunstrokes etc are a combined package that we are presented with by the heat of summer. It becomes very important to keep your body well hydrated in order to prevent dehydration and to prevent any damage to the skin. The best solution to keep your body and skin hydrated is to drink plentiful amount of water. The more water you drink the chances of dehydration reduce. There are several foods provided by Mother Nature, which are loaded with water and help in keeping our skin hydrated!
 1. Lettuce
Lettuce has a very high water content (95%) and hence is best to keep skin hydrated. It is also nutritionally rich with omega3 fatty acids, iron, proteins, iron; calcium. It is healthy food as it has barely any fat and calories. Have healthy lettuce salad everyday.
  • Coarsely cut lettuce in a bowl
  • Add lemon juice
  • Add a little salt
  • Pour a little olive oil
  • Mix well 

2. Broccoli

Broccoli has 89% water and has anti-inflammatory properties, which helps in controlling skin allergies. Broccoli also fibers, vitamins A, C, calcium and fair amount of folic acid. Broccoli can be added to whole wheat pastas and canals be had as a veggie.

3. Avocado

Avocados have vitamin C and E, which are very good for the skin. They have monosaturated fats, which seals the moisture in the skin. Avocados contain good fat, which nourishes the skin and moisturizes it thus keeping it supple and glowing. Raw avocado can be had as salad. Avocado juice also tastes delicious. Make the choice as per the wish of your taste buds.

4. Yellow And Orange Vegetables

These colored vegetables contain antioxidant beta-carotene, which prevents drying of skin. It also gives protection to the skin from harmful rays of the sun.
The presence of vitamins A and C help produce collagen and protect skin against damage. Mangoes, pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes etc are included in this category. Important tips to be kept in mind are that when these vegetables are cooked more beta-carotene is obtained.

5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Olive oil has vitamin E and good fats, which keep the skin hydrated. You can use olive oil in cooking and also can be used as salad dressing. Olive oil cannot only be consumed it can also be applied to skin to remove the dryness.

6. Apples

Apples contain vitamin A; C and E.They have high water content and also contain fibers and phytochemicals. Have at least one apple daily for a healthy skin. Apple has anti oxidants and it also works as an antiaging agent. They also
help reduce wrinkles and prevent tissue damage. Apply mixture of apple
juice and honey on the face and let it dry and then wash it off with water.
This facemask hydrates the skin.

7. Yogurt

Yogurt is the best food option for summer. The 89% water content makes it one of the best foods to prevent dehydration. It also has proteins, vitamin B and calcium. It has friendly bacteria, which is useful against skin infections. Have a bowl of fresh low fat curd everyday in summer.

8. Green Leafy Vegetables

Green leafy vegetables like spinach, fenugreek have phytochemicals and folates, which are useful in hydrating the skin. They also have iron, omega4 fatty acids and vitamins A, B, E which is useful in getting healthy skin. You can sauté or stem the leafy vegetables. If you like the taste you can have it raw as a salad.

9. Nuts

These are rich source of vitamins A, B and E, monosaturated fats, antioxidants that keep the skin hydrated. They help in the cell renewal process and improve skin elasticity. Mix some walnuts, pistachios, and almonds and store it in a jar. Have a few of these everyday in the morning.

10. Rice

Rice has 70 % water. It also has iron and carbohydrates. You can have a small helping of steamed rice everyday. You can make a yummy meal by combining rice with some yellow and orange veggies, broccoli and olive oil as follows:
  • Take diced carrots, red and yellow peppers
  • Take a few florets of broccoli
  • Heat olive oil in a pan
  • Add the veggies and sauté
  • Add steamed rice, salt and black pepper
  • Mix well.
  • Put off the flame after 5 minutes
  • Enjoy this tasty rice with yogurt as an accompaniment.
These simple natural foods help in protecting our skin from damages due to the summer heat. In addition to above foods, there are other options like cucumber, watermelon that are high in water content and delicious. Include these too in your regular summer diet. In addition follow a few precautionary measures during summer to protect the skin. These measures can be avoiding going out in the sun. If you have to go out then wear hat and glares. Wear a sun block. Wash your face thoroughly once you are back from outside and last but the most important thing drink lots of water to fight the heat.
